Mitosis: Stages and Significance · NCERT Biology

Mitosis is also known as equational division because:

  1. It occurs in equal time intervals so each daughter cell matures at the same rate
  2. The daughter cells have the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell
  3. The cytoplasm is divided equally between the two resulting daughter cells
  4. It occurs only in diploid cells where both chromosome sets must be preserved
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: The daughter cells have the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell

Mitosis is termed equational division because the chromosome number remains constant — daughter cells receive the same number (2n) as the parent cell. The genetic material is distributed equally, ensuring no gain or loss of chromosomes.
