Trench Warfare · World History

A 'fire-step' was a structural feature of a trench used to:

  1. Store ammunition, weapons, and supplies safely underground
  2. Allow soldiers to see over the parapet and fire weapons
  3. Provide a place for soldiers to cook meals
  4. Reinforce the walls against collapse
Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: Allow soldiers to see over the parapet and fire weapons

Because trenches were dug deep enough to protect standing men, a ledge or fire-step was necessary for soldiers to step up and aim over the edge. When not in use, soldiers stepped down to remain hidden from enemy snipers.
